Hanover is
a small, rural town located on the western side of New Hampshire in the
scenic Upper Connecticut River Valley. The river forms the border
between Vermont and New Hampshire. The town of Hanover and surrounding
region is a part of what is known as "The Upper Valley" referring
to the geographic area stretching along both sides of the
Connecticut River in Central New Hampshire and Vermont.
Hanover is 2.5 hours by car from Boston, 5 hours from NYC, and 3 hours
from Montreal. You can also travel to nearby White River Junction,
Vermont by bus or train.

increased the processing time for visa applications. U.S. consular

Getting Here
By Car
From the Boston area (about 2.5 hours)
- Take I-93 north to I-89 north at Concord, NH, past Mancheser, NH ($0.75 toll).
- Get off I-89 at Exit 18 in Lebanon, NH
onto Route 120. (A sign says that it is the exit for Dartmouth College.)
- Bear right off the exit, heading north
on Rt.120 into Hanover. 4.1 miles from the exit, Rt. 120 forks at a traffic light.
- Bear right at the fork, following Rt. 120 one-half mile on South Park
Street to the second traffic light.
- Turn left at the light, onto East Wheelock Street.
- Follow East Wheelock for two-tenths of
a mile. You will come to the Hopkins
Center (left) and the
Dartmouth Green (right).
- Take the first right onto College Street driving along
the east side of the green.
- Take the first left onto Wentworth Street
(in front of Baker Library).
- At the end of the block, turn right onto
North Main Street. Haldeman Center, in which the Dickey Center and
Institute of Arctic Studies is located, will be on your right.
From Burlington, VT (about 1.5 hours) and points North (Montreal and Ottawa)
- Take I-89 south to I-91 north in White
River Junction, VT. See following directions.
From New York (about 5 hours), southern New
England and points south
- Take I-91 north to exit 13 at Norwich, VT.
- Bear right off the exit, across the Ledyard Bridge
spanning the Connecticut River.
- Continue up the hill (West Wheelock Street)
to the top of the hill and to the traffic light in the center of town -
nine-tenths of a mile from the interstate exit.
- On your left at the light is the
Dartmouth Green; to your right is the Hanover Inn.
- Take the first left onto College Street driving along
the east side of the green.
- Take the first left onto Wentworth Street
(in front of Baker Library).
- At the end of the block, turn right onto
North Main Street. Haldeman Center, in which the Dickey Center and
Institute of Arctic Studies is located, will be on your right.

By Bus
From Boston's Logan Airport and South Station: Service to the Hanover area is provided by Dartmouth Coach and Vermont Transit travels
to White River Junction, VT with connections to the Dartmouth campus.
Dartmouth Coach from Logan Airport
stops at its terminal in Lebanon, NH and then continues on to the Hanover Inn,
centrally located on the Dartmouth
campus.
From New York City: Service to the bus station in White River Junction, Vt. is provided by Greyhound
(direct bus becomes Vermont Transit in Springfield, Mass.). The bus stops at the
Hanover Inn as well as the White River Junction bus terminal.
The White River hotels are within walking distance to
the White River Junction bus terminal, but only the Comfort Inn is safely walk-able. It is recommended to pre-arrange taxi
service if needed. White River Junction bus station is five miles from
campus, and taxi service is available. If you are staying at either Marriott hotel in Lebanon, it is recommended that you either
make arrangements with your hotel for shuttle service if available, or
pre-arrange taxi service to your hotel from the Lebanon terminal. If you are
staying in hotels in White River Junction, Vermont,
you should arrange for a taxi from either the Lebanon terminal of the
Dartmouth Coach, or from the Hanover Inn.
By Train
Amtrak
provides daily passenger service from Washington, D.C.; Philadelphia;
New York; and intermediate points to White River Junction, Vt.
Information is available on the Amtrak website or by calling
800-872-7245 from within the U.S. The White River Junction train
station is about five miles from campus, and taxi service is
available.
Local Transport
ASSW
Shuttle Bus
We have contracted with JRB Bus Company to
provide direct transportation to the meeting locations
from the conference hotels. This
service is running March 14-20 only. The ASSW
campus pick-up/drop off location is on north end of the green, near
Rauner Library
and in front of Baker Library (the building with the bell tower -- see
map.)
The Shuttle bus
will pick-up/drop-off in front of these hotels in White River Junction:
Comfort Inn, Comfort Suites, Hampton Inn. Please be ready and visible at
assigned time.
The bus or a Dartmouth Van will service The Courtyard
Marriott
and the Marriott Residence Inn. Note: a hotel shuttle service from these two
hotels is also available by arrangement and may be more convenient to guests at these
locations.

Local Bus Service, Advance Transit (AT):
Advance Transit (AT) is a free
service that operates weekdays only from approximately 6AM - 6PM.
Buses connect the Dartmouth
campus to the surrounding areas with color coded routes. Your hotel reception
desk can help you find stop closest to your hotel. Full information about the routes can be
found here.
From the Norwich Inn on the Brown Route,
ask the driver to let you off at Steele Hall and refer to the campus map
for the short walk to Haldeman
Center.
From
White River Junction Hotels on
the Orange Route, ask the bus driver to let you off at Webster Avenue (directly across
from the Haldeman Center). This stop is located between the Vail and Bookstore stops as listed on the Advance Transit schedule.
From

Parking on campus
Permits are required in all campus
parking lots. Registered participants of ASSW will be given permits at
registration allowing them to park in Dewey, H, or J-L Lots (see ASSW map).
Permits must be displayed on the dash and are only valid for the day and in the
lots specified. Vehicles parked without a permit or in a restricted area may be
ticketed or towed. Campus parking permits will not be required on the weekend, and visitors may use lots other
than Dewey that are closer to the meeting site. Carpooling is encouraged.
Metered parking is available on
side streets, up to a 2-hour limit in most locations.
